ELKS NATIONAL HOME DESIGNATED
AS HISTORIC DISTRICT

We are pleased that the Elks National Home has been approved for listing in the Virginia Landmarks Register as an historic district and will be recommended for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. These are honorary listings that can open the doors for some financial assistance for renovations through tax credits, if the Order of Elks decides to go that route. We are indebted to Mrs. Betty Gereau and the Bedford Historical Society for their efforts in bringing about this distinction for the Home. The Historical Society also made the Elks National Home the theme of their annual meeting in February. Mr. Dan Pezzoni, who prepared our nomination for the State and National Registers, gave an excellent presentation for the meeting and then those in attendance were bussed to the Home for tours and a display of historical items relating to the Home. Here is a photo of a fascinating model of the Home that was found some time ago. We have no information to indicate when it was built or by whom. However, we believe it was probably done between 1916 and 1923. You can see that a portion of it (the light colored buildings) has been repainted and refurbished to some degree. The remainder is in the original condition. This photo shows only a portion. The entire model includes all the original 1916 buildings and the train station building, which is now a local restaurant. |
